Central Prison, Cherlapalli has been established by re-locating of District Prison, Secunderabad in the lands of Prisoners Agricultural Colony, Moula Ali during the year 1999-2000. All the structures of the jail were constructed in a record period of about 18 months. The area of the Jail within 4 Walls is 43.40 Acres. The total area including the outer premises is 117.13 Acres. The work of Central Prison Cherlapalli was completed in the year of 2000 and inaugurated on 05-05-2000. It is the largest Prison in Telangana and erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh confining more than 2000 Prisoners at any given point of time. There are many manpower oriented industries in this Prison. Steel furnitures made in this Prisons manufacturing wing is known for durability and economy. Educational facilities are provided to the Prisoners through distance education system. A semi open Prison also attached to the Central Prison where vegetables are grown .
