The District Jail, Nalgonda was constructed in 1916 during the Nizam's era. it was a District Jail in Hyderabad State. After formation of Andhra Pradesh it was downgraded as Sub Jail Grade II, Later the Post of Superintendent in the cadre of Deputy Superintendent of Jails was created in the year 1980. This Jail has been in the control of Jail's Department since 05-01-1981.

Number of freedom fighters like Bommagani.Dharma Bhiksham (former Member of Parliament and Member of Legislative Assembly from Nalgonda constuency) were confined in this Jail.Initially
