Prisoners’ Agricultural Colony, Cherlapalli was started in the year 1952 for the Welfare of Prisoners with intent to give them training in Agro-based Industries, so that they can employ themselves in one of the trades, they were trained in the Colony. The total extent of this colony is 128.29 Acres. 60% of land is under cultivation and 20% of land is covered with orchards, leaving the remaining land used for roads and office buildings.

SELECTIONS FOR INMATES :

Prisoners are selected here from Closed Jails on certain parameters.Prisoners who have served 1/3 of their sentence in closed jails, have Agricultural back grounds  and willing to work in Open Air Jails, and not sentenced in prohibitive Sections of law e.g theft,  Dacoity, Rape and Offence Against women, will be selected by the Selection Committee and are transferred to Prisoners Agricultural Colonies on the orders of the Director General of Prisons.

THE FOLLOWING ARE THE ANIMAL HUSBANDRY  & AGRO BASED UNITS

           

Dairy Farm:          The Dairy farm in this colony was started in the year 1978 to provide training to the prisoners in dairy farming besides supply of fresh milk to the prisoners of   Sister Institutions in Twin cities.

Poultry Form:    The poultry Unit was started in the year 1979 to give training to the prisoners, besides  supply of fresh dressed chicken meat to this colony as well as to the Sister institutions in twin cities.

Sheep Farm:          The Sheep farm had been started in the month of April 2003.  Old and males sheep are sold in public auction to get the revenues to the government.

Horticulture:    Different type of vegetables are grown here, using drip irrigation techniques and Green house.  The vegetables are issued to this colony prisoners and also to the sister institutions besides retail sale for public, at the Jail Counter.

Vermi Compost Unit:   The prisoners are given training in vermicompost preparations and the compost is sold in retail and  in bulk to the business buyers.
